hello world i'm Alpri,

I'm a college sophomore passionate about developing web applications that eliminate barriers between people and impactful technology. I study Computer Science in the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, taking coursework concentrated in software development and technology entreprenuership. I'm currently the Web Development Chair for Reflections | Projections 2019, an annual student-run technology conference for students in the Midwest. Previously, I was a Hackerspace Instructor for a student-run course on campus, giving lectures on basic web development and Express routing. I'm currently looking for an internship for summer 2019 to build my skills as a developer.

Hackerspace Instructor
CS 196 Freshman Honors

I teach college freshman how to make websites. For many freshman, this is his or her first experience making their own project, learning how to actually apply computer science toward developing applications. I was personally responsible for instructing over 40 students basic HTML & CSS, how to implement an API using Express, and interacting a MongoDB using Mongoose.

Course Developer
CS 125 Introduction to Computer Science

I'm innovating how computer science is taught. Computer science can't and shouldn't be taught with regular lecturing with students taking notes with pen and paper. Students need actual programming practice. I'm responsible for developing a web application using ReactJS, Redux, and Firebase that allows an instructor to assign a programming problem during lecture and get real-time feedback on student success, allotting students more practice and providing instructors with meaningful analytics.

I'm a proud Filipino. I'm passionate about embracing my unique heritage by immersing myself in an organization that celebrates Filipino Culture. I have performed with the organization's cultural dance team, Barkada, in the largest Filipino-American conference in the Midwest, Filipino Americans Coming Together (FACT). Here's a link to our performance.

Midshipmen
Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC)

I was in the Naval ROTC program on track to becoming an officer in the US Navy with a full-ride scholarship. Due to personal and academic reasons, I had to leave the program. I completed the military indoctrination training evolution known as NSO and was successful at maintaining a strict military-like schedule when in the program, attending Physical Training (PT) and classroom instruction (Drill) at 5:45 AM.

Aug 2017 - Nov 2018

Course Assistant
CS 196 Freshman Honors

I managed a 5 person student project group, developing a distributed web hosting web application using Flask. I was responsible for maintaining the git repository and assigning tasks. I also gave two lectures on web development, focusing on HTML, CSS, and React. Here are the links to the lectures (skip to about halfway): Basic Web Development & Basic ReactJS Development.

Jan 2018 - May 2018

Co-Founder
Computer Science Club

Founded club to spread computer science to the rest of the school after developing a passion for web development. Organized and Hosted a hackathon with over 100 student participants which was sponsored by companies like American Eagle and Make School.

Nov 2015 - May 2017

Co-Founder
Science National Honor Society Chapter

Founded school's honor society chapter for professional development in science through learning and public speaking opportunities. Attracted over 70 competitive applicants to the society, inducted over 25 members.

Nov 2016 - May 2017

Notable Work

a collection of projects i've worked on

Illini Advisor

Dec 2018 - Present

Illini Advisor will use smart keyword filtering to make it easier for students to find courses they will love taking. Students will be able to dynamically type keywords instead of going through a long form of checkboxes to search for courses. This project is still in early development and lacks intended functionality.

Redux State Management

Architecting state shape for usage with Redux framework. Using Redux Thunk middleware to handle asyncronous actions.

Presenting Illini

Nov 2018 - Present

Presenting Illini gives presenters interactive tools to pull real time data from the audience. Speakers can engage with their audience and show insights with real world data. Instructors can now make immediate decisions on what to cover during lecture with student feedback. To start, just upload a PDF of your slides. This project is still in early development and lacks intended functionality.

Schedule Optimizer

Aug 2017 - Dec 2017

Schedule Optimizer uses computation to generate customized class schedules without users having to deal with details. Users say which classes they want to take, our website figures out how to make it work. I was responsible for developing an intuitive frontend using React and interacting the our team's backend API. This project initially started as a project for UIUC's CS 196: Freshman Honors course.

ReactJS Frontend

Responsible for modeling course data in ReactJS for seamless user experience. Interfaced with backend API to display course data and dynamically generated schedules.

Team Project

Followed team conventions and git workflow in order to effectively collaborate with team members. Used Github stored codebase to stay synchronize with team members.

MLH: Hack Ridge 2017

October 2016 - March 2017

Organizer for Major League Hacking sponsored high school hackathon, Hack Ridge. Hack Ridge 2017 was a 24-hour open hackathon for high schoolers in the area and accommodated over 100 student hackers, many coming from other high schools. Sponsors include web design company American Eagle and programming course service Code School. Contributed to all aspects of the organizing process, focusing on marketing efforts directed toward Maine South H.S. students.

Maine Dashboard

Started Spring 2015

A website developed for Maine South High School students to keep track of class bell schedules and as a replacement to HawkTime. Initially created with only basic Javascript, CSS, & HTML, I intend to revamp the site with a new React-based frontend.
